The Cursed Portrait
Nandini | November 22nd, 2023

In the heart of a sleepy Indian village, nestled amidst lush green fields and swaying palms, there stood an old, ramshackle mansion. The villagers spoke of it in hushed tones, for they believed it to be haunted by a ghostly presence. Amongst these tales, one story stood out—a tale of a haunted painting.

Deepika, a curious and adventurous young woman, couldn’t resist the allure of this enigmatic mansion. She had heard the stories from her grandmother, who often spoke of the haunted portrait that hung on the mansion’s crumbling walls. One breezy evening, with a flickering lantern in hand, she ventured into the decaying mansion.

The mansion was a shadow of its former glory, with creaky wooden floors and cobwebs hanging from the ceiling like ghostly draperies. Dust motes danced in the dim light, and the air was heavy with the scent of aged wood. But it was the painting that captured Deepika’s attention—an intricately detailed portrait of a young woman in a vibrant red saree.

As Deepika stared at the painting, she felt a strange sensation creeping over her, like a gentle breeze whispering secrets in her ear. The woman in the portrait had piercing dark eyes that seemed to pierce Deepika’s very soul. The nameplate beneath the painting read “Meera, 1900.”

Unable to tear her gaze away, Deepika reached out to touch the canvas. As her fingers brushed the paint, she was transported into the world of the painting—a bustling market in the heart of an ancient Indian town.

Meera, the woman from the painting, stood before Deepika, her eyes brimming with a mixture of sadness and longing. She extended her hand as if pleading for help. Deepika, unable to resist, took Meera’s hand, and they ventured into the vibrant chaos of the market.

Together, they explored the bustling stalls, savoring the aroma of street food and the vibrant colors of textiles. Meera’s eyes shone with delight, her laughter filling the air.

Deepika couldn’t believe the surreal beauty of this otherworldly experience.

But as the day turned to evening, the market began to fade away, its lively energy giving way to a haunting silence. Meera’s eyes filled with tears, and she whispered, “I am trapped here, bound by a curse. Only you can set me free.”

Deepika made a promise to help Meera, determined to break the curse that held her captive. She returned to the real world, only to find the mansion transformed. The neglected paintings had come to life, each one containing a soul yearning for freedom. Their eyes pleaded with her, their silent cries echoing in the mansion’s eerie silence.

Deepika researched the mansion’s history and the mysterious artist behind these enchanted paintings. She discovered that the artist, Uday Chauhan, had been rumored to have made a pact with an ancient spirit to infuse his art with life.

As Deepika delved deeper into her quest, she found clues hidden within the paintings themselves, each one leading her closer to the truth. But as she approached the final revelation, the mansion grew darker and more foreboding.

One fateful night, as Deepika stood before Meera’s painting, a shadowy figure emerged from the canvas. It was Uday Chauhan, the artist who had made the dark pact. He tried to stop Deepika, his powers growing stronger as the curse neared its climax.

But Deepika was not alone. The souls of the other paintings, freed by her determination and compassion, gathered around her. With their combined strength, they confronted Uday Chauhan, forcing him back into the cursed canvas. The mansion trembled, and the curse was finally broken.

As the first rays of dawn bathed the mansion in a warm golden glow, the paintings returned to their static state. Deepika stood before Meera’s painting one last time, tears in her eyes. Meera’s eyes once filled with sadness, now held a glimmer of gratitude and freedom.

With a final smile, Meera whispered, “Thank you, Deepika,” before the painting returned to its quiet existence. The mansion was still once more, the curse lifted, and the paintings now radiated a peaceful serenity.
